Sculptural Sofas
Some sofas are there to disappear into a room. Sculptural sofas do the opposite - they have a presence in the space. They hold their own, and sit confidently within the room and often work best when they are allowed a little breathing room around them. Rather than being pushed hard against the edges, they can then becomes part of the spatial composition.
One of the reasons sculptural sofas work so well in difficult rooms is that they are not governed by right angles. In spaces with awkward circulation, doorways or changes in direction, a curved form can resolve the geometry in a way a conventional sofa never will. Movement flows around it, sightlines stay open and the room feels more considered as a result.
It is also worth acknowledging that sculptural sofas are not primarily about everyday lounging. A large L shaped or rectangular sofa will nearly always be better for stretching out and sinking in at the end of the day.
Sculptural sofas value lies in the pleasure they bring and the atmosphere they create, bringing a quiet sense of joy in daily life. When chosen well, a sculptural sofa becomes part of the architecture of the room, blurring the line between function and art. Below are some of our current favourites plus a slightly tamer version that we used in our Georgian Townhouse, the design allowed for the tall sash windows to be viewed properly without obscuring their view.
