HAMPSTEAD TOWNHOUSE

Located on one of Hampstead’s most desirable streets, with elevated views across the Heath, this project involves the reconfiguration and extension of a Victorian terraced house within the South Hill Park Conservation Area in the borough of Camden.

Our clients - a young family, approached us to transform and extend their house, while respecting the architectural integrity of this handsome period home.

Our scheme includes a carefully considered basement extension at lower ground floor level, alongside a raised ground floor extension at garden height. Together, these interventions create significantly more living space across two floors, providing the flexibility and openness and allow our family to have a generous kitchen, dining and living space located on a single floor, allowing for entertaining friends and family easily.

On the raised ground floor extension, a set of of carefully considered arches anchor the architectural language of the new spaces, softly echoing the proportions of the original Victorian structure. Key to the design was prioritising views to the mature rear garden, creating framed outlooks and a stronger relationship between the inside spaces and the garden beyond.

Below, the extended basement accommodates a cosy media room, plant room and gym, steam room and guest bedroom designed to be as welcoming and connected as the rooms above.

Alongside the architectural works, we are overseeing the refurbishment of the house, including a comprehensive energy efficiency upgrade with MVHR throughout the house.

Planning permission was secured swiftly, with full approval granted at first submission. The scheme received strong support from the planners for its sensitive and confident response to this historic home and its setting.
