Frognal Apartment, Hampstead, London
A Conservation area reconfiguration & refurbishment
A very generous lateral apartment, Set within the Fitzjohns and Netherall Conservation Area in the Frognal area of Hampstead in a late Victorian red brick villa in Hampstead, dating from the mid 1880s and designed in the Queen Anne revival style characteristic of this part of north London
Set within a conservation area, the house is a finely detailed example of the period, with warm red brickwork, gauged arches to sash windows, decorative cut brick aprons and elegant string courses, balanced by tall chimney stacks. The steeply pitched clay tiled roof, gabled bays and generous proportions give the façade a quiet confidence and enduring charm.
The design work focused on reconfiguring the internal arrangement to create a generous open plan living, dining and kitchen space, allowing double aspect views through the property, reinstating period coherence where it had been lost, and introducing refined modern interventions that sit comfortably within the historic fabric of the house.
We opened up the plan just enough to create a sense of connection between the living room, kitchen and dining space. The revised design will now allow views through the house, with light moving from front to back and the kitchen comfortably connected to the living and dining areas.
